The Future is Female
Today, the United States has 12.3 million women-owned businesses that accounts for 40% of businesses nationwide. To put it plainly, women are starting businesses in droves and remain a driving force in the nation’s economy. However, those feel good numbers do little to tell the larger story of the hurdles faced by women who have embraced entrepreneurship, especially in comparison to their male counterparts.

Join us for a panel discussion featuring successful female entrepreneurs with differing backgrounds and varied expertise. These women know what it takes to blaze a trail and have a track record of success that speaks for itself. In the wise words of Queen Bey, “Who run the world? Level Up: Opportunities in E-Sports, Gaming Content Creation
The rise of electronic sports leagues and gaming content creators, has created opportunities for enterprising gamers as well as investors. Tournaments are getting broadcast on ESPN, live events are drawing tens of thousands -- pre-pandemic, of course -- and creators are monetizing audiences built on platforms such as YouTube, Twitch and Discord.

Two Penn Staters: Seth Mason, founder and chief marketing officer of The Esport Company, and John Comonitski, creator “JohnyJ25” on YouTube, share their experiences of turning a passion into profit in this emerging industry.

Mason’s Esport Company has built a 5,000-person amateur e-sports league boasting 13 teams across six states. Additionally, he’s contributing to a revitalization effort in downtown Johnstown, Pa., aimed at turning a vacant, two-story building into a tech and job-training hub.

Comonitski’s JohnyJ25 YouTube channel specializes in helping gamers conquer Zombies gameplay within the popular “Call of Duty” franchise, and has amassed 361,000+ subscribers.

This event is presented by Innoblue, Penn State’s oldest community of student entrepreneurs, and be moderated by Bill Zimmerman, lecturer in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, and host of the “Happy Valley Hustle” podcast.

Happy Valley Capital Founders' Workshop: "Building Zero to One" w/ Alexander Isaacson (Xeal)
There is a common misconception that the hardest part of entrepreneurship is turning your product into a metaphorical rocket ship that will scale into the stratosphere. That stage in the journey is known as going from “one to 10.” You’ve proven your product-market fit, and now it’s time to double down on what is working, while continuously iterating on your strategies in order to scale. But, before the fun begins, founders must first go from “Zero to One,” a phrase popularized by PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist, Peter Thiel, in his book Zero to One. This is the first, and most challenging, stage in building a company. Before you’ve made your first sale, or hired your first employee, this is the time when you have to secure product-market fit, or simply put, prove that your idea is actually good. Join Happy Valley Capital and Alexander Isaacson, CEO & Co-Founder of Xeal, to learn about the "Zero to One" process and how to build technology that rapidly transforms and expands an industry.

You can view the event here: https://psu.zoom.us/j/94084168056?pwd=dmsxcnJ3d3JnS0JkcDAwaktYR01sdz09, password: Xeal&HVC.

Happy Valley Capital Founders' Workshop: "Bootstrapping" w/ Brian Magrann (Boilerplate)
Entrepreneurs can spend too much time worrying about balance sheets, revenue forecasts, and profit and loss statements. "Cash is king" and shows how much time you have to support operations. Many great ideas and technologies have been aborted on the launch pad because they did not have enough cash to get to the first external funding gate. Bootstrapping, getting a lot done on very little cash, is a common practice for early-stage companies. For most start-ups, bootstrapping is an essential first stage because it demonstrates the entrepreneur’s commitment and determination, matures a business concept into a product or service, and allows the concept to be vetted by the market. Join Happy Valley Capital and Brian Magrann, CEO & Co-Founder of Boilerplate, to learn about "Bootstrapping" and how to achieve milestones without giving away ownership and minimizing expenses.

Flipping the Script – Funding Alternatives for your Startup
Matt Brezina is one of Penn State’s most successful tech alumni entrepreneurs. Growing up in State College, Matt knew from a young age that he wanted to start his own company. Starting with childhood business ventures, Matt learned early on that working for himself gave him the satisfaction to both love his work and make a living by his own rules.

At Penn State, Matt took advantage of the college experience, excelling inside and out of the classroom. A Schreyer Honors College and College of Engineering graduate, Matt went on to graduate school and eventually moved across the country to Silicon Valley where Matt’s entrepreneurial interests turned into multi-million-dollar companies, including Xobni and Sincerely.

Matt’s story, like most entrepreneurs, is full of twists and turns, highs and lows. Despite it all, he figured out how to traverse rocky Silicon Valley terrain to secure funding for his various ventures. During this keynote event, learn more about how Matt has gone from seeking funding to being an investor as he talks about non-traditional funding alternatives that any startup can take advantage of.

Find the Right Egg for your Basket: Modern Financing Options for Your Venture
The adage of “don’t put all your eggs into one basket” is especially true when figuring out how to finance a small business. Every entrepreneur needs to understand the importance of diversifying investment sources; from angel investment to venture capital and even equity crowd funding; each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Join us for a panel discussion about the importance and process of choosing the right investment source for your startup. The panel of experts will review non-traditional funding options as well as showcase the advantages of each one. One example that will be highlighted is numo, PNC Bank’s fintech build incubator that exists to create startups, which is revolutionizing the philosophy behind financial institution-owned innovation entities.
